The third installment of the California Winter League saw many thrilling moments for the fans who ventured to Palm Springs Stadium. There were many come-from-behind victories, late-inning rallies, sparkling defensive plays, two inside-the-park home runs, and a combined no-hitter. Ultimately, the Power claimed the league championship with an exciting 7-5 triumph over the Chill.

However, the league was responsible for production of a far more significant sort.

A total of 47 participants signed contracts with affiliated or independent teams, and several more have entered into discussions with clubs that fall into one of those categories. Two of the many examples were pitcher Marcos Reyna and shortstop Miles Walding. Reyna, a righthanded starting pitcher with a big overhand curve ball, had attended Bakersfield College from his nearby home in Delano, California. Reyna entered camp having already signed a contract with the Seattle Mariners, and wanted to work enough innings to prepare himself for spring training. Walding, a product of Huntington College, an NAIA school in his Indiana, came to Palm Springs with even more basic aspirations. ”I just want to continue playing somewhere, anywhere, as long as possible,” he said at the outset. Lo and behold, he also signed a deal with a major league team when Bill Bryk, a special assistant to Arizona Diamondbacks’ General Manager Kevin Towers, inked him to a deal.

Many of the players, signed or unsigned, expressed gratitude upon season’s end due to the high level of instruction they received while taking part. And, a number of the coaches and managers indicated that they genuinely enjoyed working with and helping this year’s crop of players improve the fine points of their game.

“When you’re working with a young hitter who’s struggling and you share a thought or idea that might help him, the rewards can be great,” said hitting instructor Darrell Evans, author of more than 400 big league home runs. ”Suddenly a light goes on, you see a smile creep across that young man’s face, and you know you’ve reached him in a meaningful way.” Evans enjoyed the counsel of Hall of Famers Luke Appling, Eddie Matthews, and Henry Aaron as a developing member of the Atlanta Braves, and feels that it’s his responsibility to pass such invaluable advice on to the newest generation of players.

Manger Ricky Van Asselberg, who had signed four players from the 2011 CWL to his American Association Champion Grand Prairie Air Hogs, signed six more players from this year’s league in an effort to defend his title.

Bluesox@Power

The Power offense exploded for twenty one hits as they defeated the Bluesox 16-2 at Palm Springs Stadium to move into the California Winter League championship game on Friday.
The Power offense saw Trevor Willis hit a two run homerun and end the day three for four with three RBI. Yasutsugu Nishimoto also had a big day, going four for six with a triple and three singles.
Trevor Whyte contributed to the win by going three for three with a double and two singles, two runs scored and two RBI.
Charles Nading started the game for the Power throwing three complete, giving up two runs, five hits and striking out five before leaving with an injury. Jeremy Gonzalez relieved Nading and threw four scoreless innings, giving up only three hits and striking out four to earn the win.
The Power will take on the Chill tomorrow at 1pm at Palm Springs Stadium for the California Winter League Championship.

Snowbirds@Chill

Matt Rossingnol turned in a complete game victory for the Chill by giving up one run on six hits while striking out seven, and rightfielder Derek Pyles threw out the potential tying run at home to end the game as the Chill held on for a 2-1 victory over the Snowbirds at Palm Springs Stadium.
With the Chill down 1-0 in the eighth their offense threatened by loading the bases. Jake Taylor came through with a single that drove in two run to give the Chill a 2-1 lead heading into the ninth inning.
In the top of the ninth, Todd Alls and Chris Hartery singled to put runners at the corners with one out. Marquise Hall then proceeded to fly out to right and pinch-runner Marcus Dennistoun tagged up from third and tried to come home. Pyles threw a strike to home plate to gun down Dennistoun to complete the game-ending double-play.
The Chill victory puts them in the California Winter League championship game tomorrow against the Power at 1pm at Palm Springs Stadium.

A’s @ Bluesox

Jordan Oseguera, who arrived at Palm Springs Stadium minutes before game time, came out of the Bluesox bullpen and allowed just two hits in three innings of work in the 10-2 ‘Sox win over the A’s.

DJ Jackson led the charge offensively for the Bluesox, going two for four at the plate and driving in three runs, while scoring one in the win.

Jackson began the rally for the Bluesox in the second inning, with runners on second and third lining a two run single to score Scott Stidham and Anthony Coromato, giving the ‘Sox a 3-0 lead. Geoffrey Hobbs followed two batters later with an RBI single, scoring Jackson and making it 4-0 Bluesox.

Jackson ignited another rally in the third inning when he singled and brought home Graham Sullivan who had walked. Ryan Polk then hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Anthony Coromato to give the Bluesox a 7-0 lead.

The A’s finally cracked the scoreboard in the top of the fourth. Michael Wallace singled with runners on first and second to bring home Jason Martin. Hank Burditt followed with a sacrifice fly that scored Chad Billingslea to make the score 7-2 Bluesox.

In the bottom of fourth the Bluesox brought home three more runs to cap their scoring and earn the victory.

Oseguera earned his first victory of the season for his three innings out of the bullpen. James Shoemaker took the loss for the A’s.

Chill @ Power

The Power pitching staff combined to pitch a two hit shut-out, with Drew Cavender’s four scoreless innings leading the way as the Power clinched the top seed heading into the California Winter League post season with a 6-0 win over the Chill at Palm Springs Stadium.

The Power swung early and often against Chill starter Matt Atkins in the first inning. Yusuke Inoguchi started the scoring party with an RBI single, plating Jeremy Miller, who singled to begin the game. Trevor Willis picked up his team leading 18th RBI with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0 Power. Adrian Martinez kept the uprising going with an RBI single, drving in Inoguchi and increasing the Power lead to 3-0. Trevor Whyte added one more with an RBI triple to finish the scoring in the inning with the Power in front, 4-0.

The Power tacked on a run in the second inning off Atkins when Jeremy Miller hit an RBI double, bringing home Yasutsugu Nishimoto and upping the lead to 5-0.

A’s @ Snowbirds

Andrew Miller kept the A’s off balance all day, allowing just four hits while recording nine strikeouts en route to earning the complete game win in the Snowbirds 10-2 victory over the A’s at Palm Springs Stadium.

With runners on first and third and a run already in for the Snowbirds against James Shoemaker of the A’s, Todd Alls turned the bottom of the first into a rally with a two-run double that scored Jesse Brown and Chris Hartery, giving the ‘Birds a 3-0 lead.

The Snowbirds rallied again in the bottom of the second. Mark Morocco started the scoring with a bunt single. A walk and a hit batsman loaded the bases and Jesse Brown cleared the bases with a three-run double that upped the lead to 6-0. Chris Hartery drove in Brown with a single and Tobi Adeyemi came home on wild pitch and the rout was on at 8-0.

Both teams failed to crack the scoreboard until the bottom of the fourth against Shoemaker. With two runners on Jeff Ridgeway knocked in Adeyemi with a double and three batters later Marcus Dennistoun picked up an RBI with a walk to cap the scoring for the Snowbirds at 10-0.

The A’s avoided the shutout in the top of the seventh against Miller, who through six innings had allowed just three hits. Brian Bistagne walked to begin the inning. With one out Michael Wallace hit into fielder’s choice that moved Bistagne to third. Hank Burditt then knocked in both Bistagne and Wallace to make it 10-2.

Snowbirds firstbaseman Jesse Brown finished the day three for four with two singles, a double and four runs driven in. Miller earned his third win of the season.

Bluesox @ Chill

Vinny St. John retired the first six batters he faced on his way to five shutout innings and the win for the Chill in the 3-2 victory over the Bluesox in the afternoon match-up at Palm Springs Stadium.

Jeremy Hall matched the six up, six down effort put up by St. John for the Bluesox through the first two innings, striking out five.

In the bottom of the third against Hall the Chill finally broke through. Keith Kandel began the inning with the first Chill hit.. With one out and Kandel on second base, Relly Mercurio knocked Kandel in with a single.

After a scoreless top of the fourth for St. John, the Chill extended their lead in the bottom half. A walk and a single put two runners on for Christopher Caves. Caves unloaded with a double to center and both Tommy Williams and Derrick Pyles easily scored to push the Chill lead to 3-0.

In the top of the seventh with the Chill still leading 3-0 the Bluesox began their comeback. With Chris Treibt now in the game after the five shutout innings by St. John, Cody Rieger singled. Trace Klein then walked. With one out Scott Stidham singled home Rieger and cut the lead to 3-1 Chill. Landis Wilson brought the Bluesox a run closer with an RBI fielder’s choice and a Dillon Tindall single spelled the end of the relief appearance for Triebt. Max Whieldon came in with the bases loades and got Brett Fick to fly out to pick up his third save of the season and close out the 3-2 Chill victory for St. John.

In his hard-luck loss, Jeremy Hall pitched six innings, allowing five hits, three runs and adding 11 strikeouts. St. John was sharp in earning his first win of the season, throwing five innings, giving up one hit, no runs and striking out seven.

The Chill scored four runs in the top of the seventh to complete a 5-3 comeback win over the Snowbirds in game one of Thursday’s California Winter League double-header at Palm Springs Stadium. The victory lifted the Chill’s record to 9-4 and enabled them to stay a game behind the Power in CWL action.
