California Winter League History

Over 20 Players From the first two seasons of the Palm Springs CHILL have signed Professional Contracts with Major League and Independent League Franchises respectively.

The Palm Springs Chill was created in 2008 as an expansion franchise to compete in the Arizona Winter League. However after two consecutive successful seasons, President Andrew Starke has announced the inception of a new winter league, the California Winter League. The Chill is a division of Palm Springs POWER Baseball.

The Palm Springs Chill made history when they played their first game on Friday, February 1, 2008 at Palm Springs Stadium. It marked the return of winter baseball to historic Palm Springs Stadium. The team will continue the resurrection of baseball in Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley. Palm Springs Stadium is the former spring training home of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and has a long history of professional baseball. Click here for more information on Palm Springs Stadium.

The CHILL went on to win their semi-final playoff game and advanced to the League Championship under Evans in 2009.

Darrell Evans made his MLB debut on April 20, 1969 for the Atlanta Braves. He was the first player to hit 40 homeruns in both the American and National Leagues. Not only that, but he became the oldest player to ever lead the league in homeruns. In 1988, Evans became the 22nd player to ever hit 400 homeruns. He became the second player after Reggie Jackson to hit 100 homeruns with three teams. Evans hit a total 415 homeruns during his career.

Not only does he hold homerun records, Evans also received the honor of being on two National League All-Star teams in 1973 and again in 1983. Also, in 1983, he received the Willie Mac award for his leadership and spirit. In 1984, Evans was a Worlds Series Champion with the Detroit Tigers. Additionally, he was the American League Home Run Champion in 1985.

After the majors, he coached with the New York Yankees in 1990. Evans also spent a few years managing for the Long Beach Armada, in the Golden Baseball League.

2008 Palm Springs CHILL

The Chill won the Arizona Winter League regular season Championship outright in 2008 and were the No. 1 seed going into the playoffs, but lost the semi-final Championship game.

2008 Field Manager - Garry Templeton

Garry TempletonGarry was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 1st round of the 1974 amateur draft. He played 16 seasons in the major leagues as a switch-hitting shortstop with the Cardinals, Padres, and Mets reaching the World Series in 1984. He was a three time major league All-Star during his career, garnered a pair of Silver Slugger Awards, led the National League in triples a record three straight years, and was the first player ever to have more than 100 hits from each side of the plate as he led the league with 211 in 1979. This feat has only been accomplished by one person since.

As a manager, Garry led the Anaheim Angels’ Class A club in Cedar Rapids in 1998 and progressed to the Erie AA club, and then the Edmonton and Salt Lake City AAA clubs. Garry managed the Sonora Surf Dawgs during the AWL’s inaugural 2007 season and also managed the Fullerton Flyers for the Golden Baseball League’s 2007 season.
