Palm Springs, Calif. – Day two of the California Winter League (CWL) season continued Friday with six out of eight teams doing battle. On the auxiliary field, the Palm Springs Power knocked off MLB DC China 3-2. At Palm Springs Stadium, the Alberta Grizzly used three pitchers in a dominant effort to no-hit the Washington Blue Sox 8-0. In the final game of the day, the Palm Springs Chill and British Columbia Bombers tied 3-3 in a back-and-forth effort.
Palm Springs Power @ MLB DC China
The Power relied on small ball to improve to 2-0 while handing MLB China their first loss. Chase Vinson and Daniel Walsh each had two hits for the Power. Palm Springs struck first with two runs in the second. MLB China cut the lead in the fourth with three straight singles from Duojie Gezhi, Jing Pengwei, and Minxi Wang off the bench. Gezhi led MLB China with two hits. Lin Ziquiang tied it at two in the fifth by scoring on an error. Zachary Gomia then scored the go-ahead run in the seventh for the Power as one of four hit batters.
Washington Blue Sox @ Alberta Grizzly
In a battle of two teams who lost on opening day, Alberta clobbered Washington in an 8-0 no-hit effort. Wyatt Rowland threw the first four innings for the Grizzly, Garrett Kalm pitched the fifth, and Kenny Williams finished the last two innings of the seven inning no-no. Rowland was perfect in his start with four strikeouts. The Grizzly broke open the game early with a four run first inning. Remy Heckman led the way offensively for Alberta with two hits, including a double.
Palm Springs Chill @ British Columbia Bombers
The Chill and Bombers finished in a 3-3 tie. Jake Holloway for the Chill and Ayura Kobayashi for the Bombers each traded zeroes for the first two innings from the bump. Kobayashi recorded seven strikeouts in his four inning start. British Columbia opened the scoring in the fourth. Two hit batters to open the inning and a ground ball RBI from Alan Goodwin added the game’s first run. The Chill answered in the bottom of the third with three consecutive hits from Sheldon Johnson, Alex Aguillar, and Luke Churchill. Goodwin launched a game-tying two run homer to left field to tie the game at three in the sixth. British Columbia had two chances to walk off Palm Springs in the seventh with Evan Lorey at second after a single and wild pitch, but a ground out and a pop-out forced a draw to the back-and-forth affair.
The CWL continues with the first weekend games of the season at Palm Springs Stadium. The Oregon Lumberjacks take on the Palm Springs Chill at 10 AM followed by MLB DC China battling the Canada A’s at 12:30 PM.
