Palm Springs, Calif. – The California Winter League played two of three scheduled games on Thursday before rain made conditions unplayable. The Oregon Lumberjacks shutout the Canada A’s 6-0 and the Alberta Grizzly hung on to defeat the Palm Springs Power 8-7. Steady rain during the first stadium game forced the final scheduled game of the day between the Washington Blue Sox and British Columbia Bombers to be postponed to a later date.
Oregon Lumberjacks @ Canada A’s
The Oregon Lumberjacks (3-3) defeated the Canada A’s (3-3) 6-0 on the auxiliary field in a game called after six innings. Lumberjacks’ starter Angel Landazuri scattered two hits over five innings of shutout baseball with 11 strikeouts and no walks. Justin Rios pitched a 1-2-3 sixth inning to finish off the Oregon win. Nick Atkins, Brandon Fields and Yushin Ohta combined for seven hits with five RBIs to anchor the top of the Lumberjacks lineup.
Palm Springs Power @ Alberta Grizzly
The Grizzly (4-3) scored all eight of their runs in the first three innings to knock off the Power (3-3) 8-7. The Power scored twice in the first on a Chase Vinson ground-out and a Brock Rudy sacrifice fly. The Grizzly proceeded to score eight unanswered runs over the next three innings. Alberta’s bottom three batters Adam Green, Remy Heckman and Tate Wargo led the way with five hits, five runs scored and four RBIs. William Shea pitched the first five innings with eight strikeouts in the winning effort for Alberta. The teams combined for 18 hits and 15 stolen bases in the wet, offensive contest.
The CWL continues on Canada Day Friday with five dollar admission for Canadian residents at Palm Springs Stadium. MLB DC China will take on the Washington Blue Sox at 10 AM to be followed by the Palm Springs Power and Canada A’s at 12:30 PM.
