Palm Springs, Calif. – The California Winter League returned from its one-day Super Bowl hiatus with a bang, hosting a packed quadruple-header today. The Auxiliary Field kicked off the action with the British Columbia Bombers facing off against Team China, followed by a matchup between the Palm Springs Chill and the Palm Springs Power. Simultaneously, the main stadium field hosted its first game of the day, featuring the Canada A’s taking on the Washington Blue Sox at 10:00 AM. The baseball marathon concluded with an afternoon showdown at the stadium between Team China and the Alberta Grizzly, providing fans with a full day of exciting CWL action.
CHINA 8 – 5 BOMBERS
Team China increased their win total to 12 after a close victory over the British Columbia Bombers at the Aux field. Jordan Henke was the starter for the Bombers while Team China pitched Zhao Lun first. Both offenses got going early, China scoring three runs in the top of the first. Four singles, two walks and an error brought those three runs in. The Bombers would respond with three of their own in the bottom half, as Davis Drewek hit a three-run home run to tie the game. China would not stop there, scoring three more in the second inning. RBI singles by Lu Yun and Li Yuyang scored the first two and a double by Zhang MingXin scored Lu Yun to make it 6-3. The Bombers got one back in the bottom of the second, as a Joshua Hoffman single would score Michael Sims. The offenses would cease for a bit, as the next two innings were scoreless, led by pitching from Hua Dan Cai Rang for China and Bubba Thompson. There was only one hit from each side in those two innings. China would extend their lead in the top of the fifth, as Chen Jiaji was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded against Bombers reliever Jaden Brown. A Lu Yun sacrifice fly would score Hu Tian Yuan to give China an 8-4 lead. Brown and Sihyun Kim along with China pitcher Sun Guangxuan would throw another two scoreless after the top of the fifth, and Alan Carter would be brought in to close out the game for China. One run came in after a walk and three singles and with the bases loaded and two outs, Carter struck out Nolan Machibroda to end the threat and give China another win. China improved to 12-3 while the Bombers fell to 4-9.
China also played the Grizzly later in the afternoon. Both teams will be facing each other in their next game tomorrow at 10:00 a.m.
CHILL 8 – 7 POWER
The Battle of Palm Springs saw the Chill edge the Power in a close win at the Aux field. Cooper Bagby started for the Power up against Jeff Rotz for the Chill.
The scoring started in the bottom of the first, as Robert Starr drove Francisco Pulido for the first run of the game. The Chill would get one of their own in the top of the second, an error by third-baseman Assaf Lowengart scoring Jarrett Burney to tie the game at one apiece. Both offenses were held scoreless until the fourth, where Jhamante Woods hit a sacrifice fly and Braden Spano knocked in Dominic Bucko with a single to give them a 3-1 lead. The Power minimized the lead to just one in the bottom half of the frame with a Tristan Pacheco walk with the bases loaded. A scoreless fifth from both sides led to an offensive outburst on both sides in the sixth. The Chill had all of their first five hitters in the inning not only get on but score. Stephen Johnson brought one in with a single, a fielder’s choice made it two, another single from Ethan Roberts made it 6-2 and Caleb Ware drove in two more to extend the lead to six. The Power retaliated with five of their own in the bottom of the sixth. Two errors scored Jacob Maiben. A Lowengart double scored Tristan Pacheco, a Wen Hung Wu single scored Lowengart and John Taylor drove in two more with a double to bring the game back to a one-run deficit. It would stay 8-7 the rest of the way as Johansel Gomez tossed a 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts to win it for the Chill and get the save. The Chill improved to 8-6 while the Power lost their third in a row and fell to 5-9. The Chill play tomorrow against the Canada A’s at 12:30. After an off-day, the Power will play their final regular season game on Wednesday against the Blue Sox at 9:30 a.m. on the Aux field.
A’s 10 – 6 BLUE SOX
The first stadium game of the day was an eventful one. The 11-2 Canada A’s matched up with the 4-8 Washington Blue Sox. A rematch after Tyler Foug walked it off last week, the Blue Sox came out swinging from the first. Washington’s starter Hudson Meyers started off rolling, facing just two over the minimum through four innings, striking out six. It looked like the early five run lead his offense gave him would be too much for the A’s to overcome. The Blue Sox tagged Chet Robinson over the first two innings with six hits and five runs. Allen Goodwin hit a sac fly in the second scoring Tommy Easley as the fifth run of the game and Goodwin’s second RBI in as many innings. Goodwin was in the center of all Blue Sox run production as in the fifth he reached on an error by Jorge Colon that allowed Kevin Gameros to score from third giving the Blue Sox a six run lead. That sixth run would be the final one for Jimmy Johnson’s offense as both Robinson along with Tyler Foug shut down the Blue Sox offense. The wheels fell off for Meyers in the fifth. Jorge Colon led off the inning with his second hit of the game. Daiskue Fukuda drove him in with an RBI single two batters later. The game changed with two outs in the fifth. Dane Simon went up to hit with two on and ended Meyers’ outing with a three run home run off the scoreboard. The A’s offense had woken up and they were within two with six outs remaining. The teams exchanged zeroes going into the seventh and with Michael Slaton on the mound, the A’s tee’d off The first five batters all reached to start the inning. A Matthew Ward RBI single scored Matthew Ward and during Sam Ruta’s at bat, a wild pitch from Slaton scored Dane Simon to tie it up. Four more runs would score before the Blue Sox could escape to the bottom of the seventh. Foug gave up a leadoff single to Angus Stayte before retiring the next three to close out the win. Foug took home the win and Slaton took the loss. Both teams are back at it on Tuesday with the Blue Sox facing the Grizzly on the turf field. The A’s will play against the Chill at 12:30 on the stadium.
CHINA 16 – 1 GRIZZLY
Team China exploded offensively on the Alberta Grizzly to win back-to-back games on Monday afternoon. Starters Delvis Lorenzo (Grizzly) and Yi Jian (China) made quick work of the first two innings, both starters allowing only two baserunners in those first two frames. Lorenzo began to break in the top of the third, allowing four straight baserunners aboard with three hits, including a bases-clearing three-run double from China’s leftfielder Xing Wenbin to plate the first runs of the ballgame. An error on Davie Morgan and an RBI double by Li Ning backended a five-run third inning for Team China. Team China scored in the subsequent two innings as well, one off of Daniel Clark in the fourth and six off of Yuma Ogino and Kevin Consolazio in the fifth. Ogino started off the fifth giving up a leadoff double to Li Ning, followed by four straight walks, causing Grizzly manager Jared Lemieux to give Consolazio the chance to limit the damage. Despite walking two more and making it a 12-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth, the Grizzly’s fate was set. Lemieux made four offensive substitutions in the bottom of the fifth, following a leadoff single from Jason Leon. Back-to-back one-out singles from newcomers Thomas Petrosino and Justin Ayala got Leon around from first to break the shutout and score their first and only run of the game. Consolazio used that positive momentum to work a quick sixth, facing only four batters in contrast to the six he faced to get out of the breakout fifth. China got their final rally in the seventh, continuing to pour the pine and kick off the seventh with four straight baserunners on three hits and an error, all of which came around to score and extend their massive lead to 16-1. Sudi Xuo worked a six-pitch bottom of the seventh to close the book on a game that went two hours and 42 minutes. Team China defeated the Alberta Grizzly 16-1, advancing to ten games above .500 (13-3), while the Grizzly took their fourth straight loss and second 15-run loss in the past week, falling to 3-11. Delvis Lorenzo takes his first loss of the season (2-1), while Wu Haizheng gets his first win of the year (1-1). Team China will take on the British Columbia Bombers tomorrow at 10 AM at Palm Springs Stadium. The Alberta Grizzly play the Washington Blue Sox at 9:30 AM on the auxiliary field tomorrow as well.
