Palm Springs, Calif. – The California Winter League provided fans with a few great matchups at Palm Springs Stadium Saturday. The first game of the day saw a battle between the Canada A’s and the Alberta Grizzly. The stadium games featured the British Columbia Bombers face the Palm Springs Chill, and Team China against the Palm Springs Power.
A’s: 10 – GRIZZLY: 7
The A’s and Grizzly met on the Back field for the first game of the day. The Grizzly started off with an early lead, taking advantage of four free passes by A’s starter Jon Tessier in the first inning. Alberta quickly fell behind though as Canada scored seven runs over the next three innings, breaking it open in the fourth and chasing Grizzly starter Matthew Maldonado out of the game after three walks and a hit batter to start the inning. The teams traded blows and a flurry of pitchers throughout the late innings, but a six run bottom of the sixth for the Grizzly was not enough to take down the now 7-1 Canada A’s who sent Alejandro Izquierdo out to close out the game with a clean seventh inning, recording the save. Both teams get Sunday off and will return to action in games at the stadium on Monday. The A’s will take on 7-1 China in what should be one of the biggest games of the year and a battle for first place in the CWL. The Grizzly will face the Blue Sox right after that with a scheduled first pitch at 12:30.
BOMBERS: 14 – CHILL: 4
The British Columbia Bombers exploded offensively in the late innings on their way to a 14-4 win over the Palm Springs Chill on Saturday morning. The Bombers struck quickly with a leadoff double by Do-ryeol Baek on the first pitch of the game and Eddie Javier Jr. followed by reaching on an error by Chill left fielder Ting-Wu Chung. Both men then came around to score on a two-run single by Nolan Machibroda to give the Bombers a 2-0 lead. The Chill then answered back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the first on a two-run single by Jarrett Burney and an RBI single by Tristen Ciarlo to give the Chill a 3-2 lead. The score would remain that way until the top of the fourth inning when Jaden Brown led off the inning with a walk and then scored on an RBI triple by Sawyer Stidham. Stidham came in to score one batter later on an RBI groundout by Bubba Thompson and the Bombers never relinquished the lead from there. Younghuyn Lee picked up the win for the Bombers after going five innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Lee did not allow a hit after the first inning. The Bombers broke the game open in the final two innings after plating five runs in the sixth and adding another four in the seventh. Tristan Baker took the loss for the Chill after allowing four runs (three earned) in 3.1 innings. The two teams square off again Sunday morning at Palm Springs Stadium starting at 10am.
CHINA: 5 – POWER: 1
Team China won their seventh-straight game of the 2025 season over the Palm Springs Power on Saturday afternoon. A leadoff walk to Tianyuan Hu in the top of the first came around to score on a double-steal attempt that got away from Power catcher Tyler Hendrix on the throw back to home. For the eighth straight game, Team China followed the trend of putting up a run in the first inning. After Cooper Bagby replaced Power starter David Reckers in the third, two consecutive one-out walks to Jaiji Chen and Yang Jin came around to score on a series of pass balls and wild pitches that got away from Hendrix, who struggled to keep the ball in front of the plate from his batterymates missing the zone. The Power avoided the shutout in the bottom of the third, courtesy of an RBI single from Jude Drzemiecki that scored a leadoff double by Assaf Lowengart. That third-inning run would be the last one by either team until the seventh inning. China expanded the 3-1 stalemate in the top of the seventh, taking advantage of the final Power reliever of the day, Kyle Bell. One strike away from facing the minimum, Bell gives up a walk to Jiaji Chen, who advanced into scoring position on a pass ball. An Assaf Lowengart error off the bat of Yang Jin scored Chen, who then scored off an RBI double from Ning Li. Xiang Wang came into the bottom of the seventh with a new four-run lead, where he struck out two and gave up one hit in the four batters he faced to shut the door on the Power offense for win number seven. The 5-1 China victory sent the Power to two games under .500, while the now 7-1 Team China kept pace with the Canada A’s at the top of the CWL standings.
