Palm Springs, Calif. – The California Winter League held a thrilling doubleheader at Palm Springs Stadium Sunday. The first game saw the Palm Springs Chill against the British Columbia Bombers, while game two featured Team China battling the Washington Blue Sox.

CHILL 2 – 0 BOMBERS
A pitching masterclass saw the Palm Springs Chill defeat the British Columbia Bombers. Takushi Minegawa of the Bombers faced off against Jeff Rotz of the Chill, both pitchers throwing the first three innings scoreless. Four of the six half-frames were 1-2-3 innings, both teams combining for only two hits but four walks. The closest anyone came to scoring in the first three were two walks in the second by Jarrett Burney and John McGuire, but no one came around. The first run would come in the top of the fourth, where Caleb Ware would lead off the inning with a single and advance to second on a stolen base. He would advance to third on a groundout by Braden Spano before a wild pitch scored him to make it 1-0. Jeff Rotz finished his day with four scoreless and five strikeouts, while Minegawa gave up just the one run and struck out seven. It was Johansel Gomez to pitch for the Chill and Sebastian Encarnacion for the Bombers. Both men pitched their first two scoreless and giving up no hits, the only runner to reach being Burney after an error at first by Mandala Bertino. The Chill would just barely extend their lead in the top of the seventh, John McGuire hitting a leadoff single and advancing to third on two groundouts, before also scoring on a wild pitch. Gomez would walk two in the bottom half but get the three-inning save as the Chill won it 2-0. Gomez would finish with three scoreless and six strikeouts while Encarnacion had five of his own, making a total of 22 K’s in total between the four pitchers. The Chill are now over .500 with the win at 5-4, while the Bombers dropped to 2-6.
The Bombers play tomorrow at 9:30 against the Palm Springs Power at the Auxilary field, while the Chill look to stay over .500 on Tuesday against the Canada A’s.

CHINA 2 – 0 BLUE SOX
Team China continued their pitching excellence as they shut out the Blue Sox for the second time in three days, winning 2-0 to improve to a league leading 8-1 record. Team China scored two runs in the second inning and never looked back from there as four China pitchers managed to work around traffic and strand seven Blue Sox runners on base. The quartet of Alan Zhang Carter, Guangxuan Sun, Zhou Jie and Wei Zhao allowed just four hits and worked around four errors to complete the shutout. Clayton Warner took a tough loss for the Blue Sox as he allowed just two unearned runs on four hits with three strikeouts and no walks in his four innings of work. Guangxuan Sun picked up the win for Team China with two scoreless innings and Wei Zhao recorded the save after being helped out defensively by his center fielder Pei Liang. The China center fielder turned an impressive double play after making a running catch on the warning track in left center field and then fired a strike to the second baseman Ning Li who relayed on to first for a double play after Han Yuan Hu had led off the inning with a single. Zhao then struck out Shuya Funada to end the game and give Team China their eighth consecutive win. Both teams return to action on Monday with Team China taking on the Canada A’s at 10am and the Washington Blue Sox hosting the Alberta Grizzly at 12:30pm.
