Palm Springs, Calif. – The Washington Blue Sox and Alberta Grizzly faced off in the first game at Palm Springs Stadium at 10 a.m. and David Peterson’s club took the win 5-4, holding off a late inning push by the Grizzly. Coming off a dominating 16-2 opening day win, Washington turned to Fu Yan Jhang to face Jared Lemieux’s lineup. Jhang delivered four solid innings before handing the ball to Josh Nielson who closed the game out allowing just one run on two hits across three innings. The Blue Sox took a 5-1 lead in the fourth on the back of two solo home runs from Joseph Esparza and Ethan Crawford. The Grizzly immediately answered with a two-run home run by Kaehukai Young to bring it within two. Jaime Baldwin took over for Eric Pettipiece in the fifth inning and worked his way in and out of jams, stumping a Blue Sox offense that was constantly ready to strike. Pettipiece was credited with the loss and Jhang received his first win of the season. The 2-0 Blue Sox have a day off before facing the Manitoba North Stars on Sunday at 12:30 p.m. at Palm Springs Stadium, The 0-2 Grizzly will search for their first win against the British Columbia Bombers on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. at the auxiliary field.
The British Columbia Bombers defeated the Palm Springs Chill 9-3 Friday afternoon at Palm Springs Stadium. The Bombers jumped out to a 4-0 lead through the first inning with the help of Mason Baronian’s two-run homer to left center. Southpaws Arthur Liu and Tino Novis combined for 6 2/3 innings and held the Chill to three runs on four hits, with Dominic Bertino entering the game on the mound to record the final out. Drew Donaldson and Will Cell were tough outs for the Chill pitching staff. Donaldson showed discipline with the bat, going 1-for-1 with three walks and two runs scored. Cell provided the power for Bobby Brown’s squad, going 3-for-3 with a walk, two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored. The Bombers improve to 1-1 and take on the Alberta Grizzly on Saturday at 9:30 am. The Chill fall to 0-2 and face the Oregon Lumberjacks Saturday at 10 am.
Two of the four 1-0 teams left standing faced off against each other at the auxiliary field, the Palm Springs Power and Manitoba North Stars would duke it out to remain undefeated on the season. North Stars would win in a dominant game 13-2 on 16 hits total on the day. Manitoba’s largest rally came off the get go in the top of the second inning, scoring 7 runs before the inning was rolled. The Power were limited on offense only getting a total of 4 hits thanks to strong pitching from David Clarke who framed 4 innings pitched and 6 strikeouts with the only blemish coming off of Tommy Barth’s 2-run homerun over the right center wall. Kota Takeuchi would have a perfect day at the plate knocking 4 hits including a double and scoring 2 runs. The North Stars begin the Winter season with a perfect record as they take a day before taking on the Blue Sox on Sunday. Meanwhile, the Power move to 1-1 and prepare to take on the Canada A’s at 12:30pm tomorrow to bounce back onto the win column.
