The Oregon Lumberjacks defeated the Canada A’s 8-7 in a wild matchup Thursday morning on the aux field. The Lumberjacks jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the second inning after back-to-back two-run doubles from Juan Garcia and Zain Zinicola. In the fourth, Yi-Ta Chen and Eli Savitt opened the inning with doubles before Zinicola sent a ball over the fence in right-center field for a two-run homer. The Lumberjacks led 8-0 through five innings behind starting pitcher Christian Zellner. He was nearly untouchable through five, allowing just two hits while striking out seven, but the A’s never quit. Canada mounted a four-run sixth inning against Zellner, capped by Remy Heckman’s three-run homer to left field, to pull within striking distance. Eduardo Solano’s leadoff homer in the bottom of the seventh sparked another rally, as the A’s eventually trailed by one run and had the tying and winning runs in scoring position but failed to bring them home. Zinicola finished 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and four RBIs. The Lumberjacks are 3-3 and face the Palm Springs Chill (2-4) at 9:30 a.m. Friday on the auxiliary field. The A’s drop to 2-4 and take on the undefeated Manitoba North Stars (6-0) at 12:30 p.m. Friday at Palm Springs Stadium.
The Manitoba North Stars took on the Alberta Grizzly in the first stadium game of Thursday morning in what became a pitchers duel between Tyler Corkhill and Jordan Riley. The 5-0 North Stars got an early lead on Corkhill and never looked back as they took down the 2-4 Grizzly 3-2. Riley was a standout on the mound for Manitoba, firing four and two thirds innings, allowing just one run and taking the win. He was cruising until the fifth when three of the first four batters reached and John Mclaren turned to Brady Chavez out of the bullpen to finish the game. The Grizzly rallied late with long innings over the last three. CJ Cepicky scored on a single by Michael Hernandez in the sixth and Jaime Baldwin put pressure on in the seventh with a one out pinch hit double off the right-center field wall to bring the winning run to the plate. Chavez retired the next two batters to end the threat and earn the save. The North Stars continue their perfect season improving to 6-0 and the Grizzly fall to 2-5. Manitoba faces the Canada A’s on Friday at 12:30 and Alberta has a day off before taking on the Washington Blue Sox at the auxiliary field on Saturday at 9:30
In the second game at Palm Springs Stadium on Thursday, the Washington Blue Sox beat the British Columbia Bombers, 4-0. The Blue Sox (5-1) took advantage of several defensive miscues by the Bombers (1-6). Four errors haunted the defense, with starter Cade Flaherty allowing three unearned runs in 4.2 innings pitched. The winning pitcher, Ben Des Rosiers, put up a six inning shutout and did not allow a hit until the sixth inning. Blue Sox first baseman Joseph Esparza totaled three hits and two doubles in the outfield. The Blue Sox will host the Palm Springs Power at 10:00 a.m. at the Stadium on Friday. The Bombers will be off Friday and return to play Saturday against the Chill at 12:30 p.m.
