The Oregon Lumberjacks downed the Palm Springs Chill 12-6 to start California Winter League (CWL) action on Friday. Just beyond the right field wall of Palm Springs Stadium, the Jacks overpowered the Chill with 13 hits and a big six run fourth inning at the turf field. Left fielder Yi-Hsun Lin led the way for the Jacks, collecting two hits in the fourth inning and a solo home run in the second inning. The Chill (2-5) did not leave without offense, and even tied the game in the third inning thanks to a grand slam from CJ Acosta. Oregon (4-3) starter Nicholas Rivas loaded the bases by walking Caden Kirker, Jake King and CJ Acosta. The Chill used five pitchers to get through the game. Starter Evan Leibl and reliever Maxwell Elliott were the only two to not allow a run in a combined two innings pitched. The Lumberjacks are off Saturday but play on the turf field again on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. against the British Columbia Bombers. The Chill face the Bombers at the stadium at 10:00 a.m. Saturday.

The Washington Blue Sox defeated the Palm Springs Power 3-2 in a sub-two-hour game Friday morning at Palm Springs Stadium. The teams traded runs in the first and third innings, with the score tied 2-2 through three innings. Blue Sox left fielder Fran Gross started the day 2-for-2 with two stolen bases and two runs scored, accounting for Washington’s offensive output. The Blue Sox added the decisive run in the fourth inning on Nick Papageorge’s RBI fielder’s choice. The final two and a half innings produced just four hits as both bullpens were effective. Logan Hocuff kept the Power within reach, allowing two hits and striking out two over 2 2/3 scoreless innings. Josh Nielson entered in the sixth and recorded the final six outs to earn the save. The Blue Sox improved to 6-1 and remained in second place in the CWL standings. They face the Alberta Grizzly (2-5) at 9:30 a.m. Saturday on the auxiliary field. The Power dropped to 4-3 and take on the undefeated Manitoba North Stars (7-0) at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Palm Springs Stadium.

Manitoba North Stars continue to roll on the season as the lone undefeated team in the league at 7-0, taking another double digit victory over the Canada A’s in a 12-1 game. North Stars started off slow against the A’s Dominick Castillo who would eventually run 11 runs in the 4 inning and beyond, thanks to a multitude of errors by the Canada defense. Noah Burkey didn’t have to do much with plenty of run support, sporting 5 inning pitched with 4 strikeouts on the day. On Canada day at the ballpark, Skye Selinsky the native of Ontario, had himself a day with getting on base 5 times and scoring four times with a bases clearing triple in the 7th inning. The North Stars prep to take on the Palm Springs Power at 12:30 pm tomorrow, while the A’s take the day off tomorrow before facing off against the Palm Springs Chill on Sunday February 1st.
