The British Columbia Bombers beat the Oregon Lumberjacks 7-4 Sunday morning on the auxiliary field. The bats were hot right out of the gate as the Bombers led 6-4 through the first two innings. Bombers Jack Halloran and Will Cell both went 2-for-3 at the plate and drove in three combined runs. Jacks right fielder Garret Bevacqua finished the day 2-for-2 with a walk and a run scored. The Bombers improve to 2-6 and take on the Manitoba North Stars (8-0) Monday morning at Palm Springs Stadium. The Lumberjacks fall to 4-3 and face the Washington Blue Sox (6-2) Monday morning on the aux field.
The Palm Springs Chill beat the Canada A’s 3-2 in walk-off fashion Sunday morning at Palm Springs Stadium. Base hits came at a premium in this pitcher’s duel as Justin Charles and Ethan Alexander went to battle on the mound. Both starters made it through five innings with the punchout pitch working, as Charles finished with eight strikeouts and Alexander with six. A Raul Guillermo solo shot that scraped by the left field foul pole gave the A’s a 2-0 lead in the fourth.
All three hits on the day for the A’s went for extra bases within the first four innings. The Chill responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the fourth after a defensive miscue from the A’s. The game remained 2-2 into the seventh. RJ Moffett was the hero for the Chill as he drove in the winning run with an RBI single. The Chill are now 3-6 and take on the Palm Springs Power (5-4) Tuesday morning at Palm Springs Stadium. The A’s drop to 2-6 and face the Alberta Grizzly (3-6) Monday afternoon at Palm Springs Stadium.
Game 2 at the ballpark featured the rematch of two of the best in the California Winter League. The Palm Springs Power’s Jayge Campbell and The Alberta Grizzly’s Kyle Moore; a long awaited rematch when these two teams played each other back on the 27th of January which ended in a double sided complete game by both pitchers. Kyle Moore started on the mound first, after taking round 1, the Power would strike first with a pair of hits from Mike Koszewski and Tommy Barth which gave the Power a 1-0 lead. A sacrifice groundout by Jason Leon would give the Power the early lead 2-0. The Grizzly would eventually score their first run of the game on a bases loaded double play forced by Michael Hernandez. Kyle Moore would go for 6 innings with 6 Ks before being pulled in favor of Eric Pettipiece after giving up another run to the Power.
Pettipiece would force a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the seventh to give his team a chance to tie and potentially walk it off against Campbell. The Grizzly got within a single run after Tyler Smith would lead off the bottom seventh with a 413 ft bomb over the right field wall to bring the game to 3-2. Then Campbell would lock in with a groundout, a flyout, and a strikeout to seal the victory and take round 2 of another classic game. A potential rematch could come in the playoffs down the road, but that will be a wait and see scenario. For now the Power get the day off tomorrow before taking on the Chill on Tuesday with the Grizzly taking on the Canada A’s at the stadium in the second game on Monday the 2nd of February.
