Palm Springs, Calif. – A wild Wednesday closed the month of January at the California Winter League (CWL). The morning began with the British Columbia Bombers holding off MLB DC China for a 4-3 win on the auxiliary field. The Canada A’s dominated the first game at Palm Springs Stadium, defeating the Oregon Lumberjacks 7-0. The day was capped in the stadium afternoon game as the Palm Springs Chill mounted a three-run comeback in the final inning to walk-off with a 6-5 win over the Alberta Grizzly.
British Columbia Bombers @ MLB DC China
Alan Goodwin got the scoring going for the Bombers (2-3-1) with a sacrifice fly in the first inning. Ayura Kobayashi then went to work on the mound for the Bombers striking out nine batters across four scoreless innings. The Bombers added three runs in the sixth and seventh for a a cushion they would later need. For MLB DC China (2-4), Zhao Lun and Zhang Weixing knocked in runs with singles for a 4-3 game in the final frame. With the go-ahead run at the plate, pitcher Shane Gustafson recorded the final out for a British Columbia victory.
Canada A’s @ Oregon Lumberjacks
The A’s (3-2) jumped on the Lumberjacks (2-3) early for a blowout victory. Il-Zadod Gabriel brought home a run with a sacrifice fly before Demetrius Foster singled two more teammates home for a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. The early lead was welcome news for Kelsie Whitmore, who filled up the zone in her CWL debut. She tossed three scoreless innings in the start for Canada. Steve Snowden added insurance in the sixth with a two-run single. Kent Evans Jr. and Jonathan Gottlieb combined with Whitmore on the mound for the 7-0 shutout A’s victory.
Alberta Grizzly @ Palm Springs Chill
The day concluded with a topsy-turvy game at Palm Springs Stadium. In the second inning, Cale Jones scorched a line drive 101 mph up the middle for an RBI single to put the Chill (3-2-1) up 1-0. Danny Crossen then started some chaos with a walk in the third inning ahead of three straight stolen bases including one of home. Luke Churchill followed with an RBI double, giving the Chill a 3-0 lead after three innings. As the game entered the fourth, the Grizzly (3-3) erupted for five runs highlighted by run-scoring singles from Ben Gbur, Gavin Stupienski and Alex Sobojinski. Alberta held that lead until the Chill rallied in the seventh. Four walks and a single tied the game at five setting up a bases-loaded, nobody-out situation for Churchill. He lifted a flyball to center field that was deep enough for a sacrifice fly to score the walk-off run for the Chill.
The CWL continues on Out of Towner Thursday with five dollar admission for non-local US Residents at Palm Springs Stadium. The Palm Springs Power face the Alberta Grizzly at 9 AM and the British Columbia Bombers battle the Washington Blue Sox at 11:30 AM. All games on Thursday have been moved up an hour due to projected inclement weather in the Coachella Valley.
