Palm Springs, Calif. – The California Winter League (CWL) returned with a full slate of four games on Wednesday after two days of rainouts. Stellar pitching highlighted the ball games with two shutouts.
The Washington Blue Sox started the morning winning their six consecutive game with a 4-3 victory over MLB DC China. The stadium opened with an Alberta Grizzly 5-0 victory over the Palm Springs Power. The British Columbia Bombers pitched the second shutout of the day with a 6-0 win over the Palm Springs Chill courtesy of a complete game shutout by Kenny Williams. The afternoon concluded with the Oregon Lumberjacks walking off the Canada A’s for a 3-2 victory.
Washington Blue Sox @ MLB DC China
The Washington Blue Sox (6-2) stayed red hot with a 4-3 win over MLB Development Center China (2-8). David Reckers pitched three hitless innings with six strikeouts in his start for Washington. MLB China took the lead after two runs in the fourth and the go-ahead tally in the fifth. The Blue Sox answered in the seventh taking two hit-by-pitches, a walk and key singles from Tim Catalano and Alex Ford for the game-tying and go-ahead run. Roger Motley III earned the win pitching a scoreless bottom half of the frame to preserve the 4-3 Blue Sox win.
Alberta Grizzly @ Palm Springs Power
The top offense in the league continued their hot-hitting on Wednesday morning. Clayton Loranger of the Grizzly (6-4) led the squad with two hits and an RBI. Garret Kalm notched two hits and five different Grizzly drove in runners. On the mound Alberta starter William Shea tossed six shutout innings with six strikeouts to earn the win in the Grizzly 5-0 victory. Jack Paulson paced the Power (4-4-1) with two hits.
Palm Springs Chill @ British Columbia Bombers
Bombers (5-3) pitcher Kenny Williams shined, going the distance in seven shutout innings of the Chill (4-5-1). Williams allowed just three baserunners with four strikeouts and needed just 66 pitches for a complete game. The Bombers scored four runs in the first inning led by a two RBI double by Reginald Coleman. Kyle Richardson and Shuto Yamada both drove in runs to cap a 6-0 victory.
Canada A’s @ Oregon Lumberjacks
Canada (3-5) and Oregon (5-4) battled scoreless through the first four innings with A’s starter Kent Evans Jr. and Lumberjacks starter Tyler Knight trading goose eggs. The Lumberjacks’ Jonathan Pena broke the tie in the fifth with an RBI hit. The A’s responded with two runs in a sixth on a Nathaniel Lai double and Ivan Sanchez single. Oregon then mounted a last minute rally in the bottom of the seventh with two outs. Two singles sandwiched around an error paved the way for Kazuya Ohira to play hero with a walkoff single and give the Lumberjacks a 3-2 win.
The California Winter League continues on Thursday with Out of Towners Thursday. All out of town US residents receive discounted five dollar admission. The Oregon Lumberjacks will face the Alberta Grizzly at 10 AM before the Canada A’s battle MLB DC China at 12:30 PM.
