Palm Springs, Calif. – Gameday 6 of the California Winter League showcased intense competition with three exciting games played at Palm Springs Stadium.
A’S 10-3 BLUE SOX
The Canada A’s get their fourth win of the season after a 10-3 win against the Washington Blue Sox. Guan Ming Liu got the start for the Blue Sox and struggled early, giving up three runs in the first, two of them coming on a Diante Jackson single. The Blue Sox would answer with one of their own in the bottom half, as Niko Diaz drew a leadoff walk and came around to score. Both starters would settle down, not allowing any runs in their next two innings of work. Hudson Myers would come in to pitch the fourth and gave up a home run to Sam Ruta, his first of the season, to make it 4-1 A’s. The Blue Sox would answer back again in the bottom half, this time against Austin Turley. Two leadoff singles led Parker Depasquale and Angus Stayte to come around and score, decreasing their deficit to one. It would all unravel for the Blue Sox in the top of the seventh. Aoi Nakaza would come into the game and immediately give up three straight extra-base hits. There would be 11 hitters that came to the plate in this inning, as six runs would score on only three hits to make it a 10-3 game. Alejandro Izquierdo would escape a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh to give the A’s the win. Canada increases their record to 4-1, while the Blue Sox fall below .500 to 2-3. The Blue Sox will be trying to get back to .500 on Thursday at 12:30 against the British Columbia Bombers. The A’s will try to stay in first place in the league tomorrow at 12:30 against the Palm Springs Chill.
CHINA: 7 – GRIZZLY: 5
The 1-3 Grizzly took on 3-1 team China in the first stadium game on Tuesday and from the first pitch it was a thriller. Matthew Maldonado was going both ways for the Grizzly and put together a fantastic start, tossing four innings of one run ball with no earned runs and five strikeouts. His counterpart, Alan Zhang Carter, was just as impressive for China. Carter started the game and faced the minimum across two frames, punching out four. It was a one run game until a barrage of free passes gave China four runs in the fifth. The Grizzly rallied to make it 5-4 going into the seventh but a seventh inning run was not enough to come back as Xudi Suo closed out the 7-5 win and earned the save. China faces the bombers Wednesday morning in the first stadium game and the Grizzly get a day off and face the Power on Thursdays first stadium game. The Grizzly fall to 1-4 and China continues their four game winning streak improving to 4-1.
CHILL: 7 – POWER: 2
The Palm Springs Chill took their third win of the season over the Palm Springs Power, 7-2, in the afternoon game on Tuesday. Power third baseman Assaf Lowengart led off the bottom of the first with an opposite field triple, followed by an infield RBI single by Francisco Pulido on the subsequent pitch. Power starter Cooper Bagby held the 1-0 shutout until the fifth, when a leadoff single by Ethan Roberts came around to score on an RBI groundout by Dominick Bucko. With the game tied at one, Cruz Hamilton and Johansel Gomez combined for 12 straight Power batters retired from the second to the sixth inning. In that sixth inning when the streak ended at the hands of Gomez, a leadoff walk to Assaf Lowengart came around to tie up the game at two heading into the final inning. Power reliever David Reckers started his relief appearance strong, retiring five straight, but then gave up five straight baserunners in the seventh. Power manager Bobby Brown turned to Kyle Bell to stop the bleeding, but he allowed all five runs on Reckers’ account to plate before finally closing the top of the final frame. Fu-yuan Chang hurled a speedy 13-pitch bottom of the seventh to conclude the comeback, securing the Chill’s third win of the season and their second win over the Power.
Wednesdays at Palm Springs Stadium is Locals Day where general admission tickets are only $5 for all Coachella Valley residents.
