Palm Springs, Calif. – Gameday 7 of the California Winter League saw two exciting matchups take place at Palm Springs Stadium. The morning matchup saw Team China battle the British Columbia Bombers, while the afternoon game featured the Canada A’s against the Palm Springs Chill.
TEAM CHINA 5 – 2 BRITISH COLUMBIA BOMBERS
Team China extended their winning streak to five in their win against the Bombers. China would score two in the first off of a Wenbin Xang single and an error from Bombers catcher Jed Downham. An Eddie Javier Jr. triple would score Do-ryeol Baek in the bottom half of the frame to make it a 2-1 game. The two sides remained scoreless until the fifth, where China would score three more only on one hit, as three errors and multiple passed balls would allow runners to score. Bombers starter Takushi Minegawa would finish with 4.1 IP, giving up five runs but only two of them being earned on three hits. The Bombers would score one more in the bottom half to make it 5-2 but were unable to complete the comeback. Pitchers Zhou Wei, Wu Haizeng and Wang Xiang would combine for five scoreless, with Wei coming away with the victory and Xiang getting his first save of the season. Team China increased their league-leading record to 5-1, while the Bombers fell to 0-5 in the early season. China has an off day tomorrow before a 9:30 game against the Blue Sox at the Aux field to try to extend their win streak to six. The Bombers will be playing tomorrow at 12:30 also against the Blue Sox, still trying to get their first win of the season.
Canada A’s 6 – Palm Springs Chill 5
The Canada A’s pulled out a thrilling comeback win over the Palm Springs Chill on Wednesday afternoon, scoring three runs in the seventh to win 6-5. The A’s struck first with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning on a two-run double by Sam Ruta. The Chill answered back with a run of their own in the bottom of the first and then took a 4-2 lead with three runs in the second inning, including RBI hits by Jarrett Burney and Ethan Martini. All of the damage in the first two innings for the Chill came after A’s starter Chet Robinson retired the first two hitters.
The Chill held onto their lead until the final frame, with each team scoring a run in the middle innings to make the score 5-3 entering the seventh. Fu-yuan Chang attempted to close things out for the Chill in his fourth inning of work, but could not shut the door on the A’s. With two outs
and a runner on, the A’s were twice down to their final strike, but Matthew Ward was hit by a pitch and Stan King followed with an RBI single to cut the Chill lead to one. That set the scene for Sam Ruta, who came up with two men on and ripped his second two-run double of the afternoon to give the A’s a 6-5 lead. The Chill threatened to tie things back up in the bottom of the seventh with a leadoff double by Dominick Bucko, but he was wiped out on a fielder’s choice one batter later. The tying run did eventually reach third after Jarrett Burney stole second and later moved to third on a wild pitch. The comeback was not meant to be for the Chill though, as Alejandro Izquierdo got John McGuire to fly out to center to end the game. The Canada A’s (5-1) will enjoy a day off tomorrow before taking on the Palm Springs Power on Friday at 12:30pm. The Palm Springs Chill will also be off tomorrow and host the Alberta Grizzly on Friday at 10am.
