Palm Springs, Calif. – The California Winter League saw exciting action today with a thrilling doubleheader. The morning kicked off with a compelling contest between the Alberta Grizzly and the hometown Palm Springs Power. Following that matchup, fans were treated to another exciting game as the Canada A’s faced off against the Palm Springs Chill. It was a full day of competitive baseball under the desert sun.
GRIZZLY 4 – 2 POWER
The Alberta Grizzly snapped their three game losing streak with a 4-2 win over the Palm Springs Power on Tuesday morning at Palm Springs Stadium.
Both teams scored a pair of runs in the first inning with the Grizzly taking advantage of a walk and HBP with back to back RBI singles by Matthew Maldonado and Anthony Burgos. The Power answered with two runs without recording a hit as they scored on a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly from Robert Starr. The Grizzly took the lead in the third inning on an RBI single by Justin Ayala to score Matthew Maldonado, who led off the inning with a walk. The Grizzly later added an insurance run in the fifth inning with the second RBI knock of the day for Ayala. On the mound, Delvis Lorenzo Muniz picked up the win for the Grizzly after putting the team on his back with 6.2 strong innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on just two hits with six strikeouts and no walks. David Reckers suffered the loss for the Power after allowing three runs in four innings with five walks and five strikeouts. Matthew Maldonado recorded the save for the Grizzly after stranding a pair of runners for the Power in the bottom of the seventh. Up next for the Grizzly is a matchup at the British Columbia Bombers at 9:30 am on Wednesday. The Power have a day off and then return to action when they host the Washington Blue Sox on Thursday at 10 am.
CHILL 7 – 6 A’S
The Palm Springs completed the upset against the 8-1 Canada A’s with a 7-6 win in Tuesday’s afternoon game at the stadium.
The teams traded blows over the first two innings with the Chill taking a 2-1 lead after the second. Austin Turley struggled over the third and fourth frames walking four and hitting a batter, allowing four runs. Ryan Schroeder took a 6-2 lead going into the bottom of the fourth and gave the Chill two more zeroes, finishing with five innings pitched and just two earned runs. The A’s started to crack through in the sixth. Tristan Baker took over and did not record an out. Two walks and hit batters each were enough for Tom Vaith to call to his bullpen. Fu Yuan Chang came in with no outs and the bases loaded and got out of the inning, but not before the A’s hit around and a five run lead for the Chill vanished. A 1-2-3 top of the seventh inning for Turelli sent the game to the final three outs and the heart of the A’s lineup had the game in their hands, down one run facing off against Johansel Gomez. Jed Downham struck out to lead off the inning, then Daiskue Fukuda walked, Sam Ruta singled and Vaith intentionally walked Matthew Warren to load the bases. Gomez proceeded to strike out Tyler Foug and Dane Simon to close out the game and earn the save. The Chill improved to 6-4 and will face off against team China on Wednesday. The A’s fall back to a tie with China and will face off against the Blue Sox on Wednesday as well.
